EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting scene is taken from the 1877 production of "The Sorcerer," an operetta by the renowned collaborators W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, at the Opera Comique in London. In the heart of the action, the central characters, Alexis and Aline, are depicted in this image, with Alexis tenderly placing a protective hand on Aline's shoulder as they stand in the midst of an otherworldly gathering. To the far left, Sir Marmaduke Pooh-Bah, the principal character and the owner of the magic potion shop, looks on with a mischievous grin. Lady Sangazure, played by a distinguished actress, can be seen in the distance, her regal bearing adding to the theatrical grandeur of the scene. Constance Partlet, a character known for her melodious voice, is positioned in the background, her mother's hand resting gently on her shoulder for support. The Vicar, Dr. Daly, stands to the right of Aline, looking concerned and bewildered as the magical events unfold. The year was 1877, and the operetta's witty dialogue, intricate music, and fantastical plot continued to captivate audiences, cementing the legacy of Gilbert and Sullivan in the annals of theatrical history.
