EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 322, featuring the Coleoptera species, Cafius fucicola, commonly known as the Sea-shore Cafius. The intricately detailed print, published between 1824 and 1839, showcases the beetle's remarkable appearance with its elongated, slender body and distinctive, wavy antennae. The Sea-shore Cafius is a member of the Ledipteridae family, which are often referred to as "spider-like" or "jumping" beetles due to their unique jumping ability. The Sea-shore Cafius can be found along the coastlines of Europe and North America, where it inhabits rocky shores and feeds on various marine algae. The illustration is accompanied by the plant Euphorbia portlandica, also known as the Portland Spurge, which is native to the Mediterranean and western Europe. The plant is depicted with its vibrant, yellow-green leaves and distinctive, spiky stems, providing a striking contrast to the muted tones of the Sea-shore Cafius. This beautiful plate was produced during the 1820s and 1830s by the renowned British naturalist, John Curtis, FLS. Curtis's British Entomology was one of the most comprehensive works of its time, featuring over 3,000 plates and documenting a vast array of insect species. The meticulous attention to detail in this print is a testament to the dedication and passion of Curtis and his team, who sought to document the natural world with the utmost accuracy and precision.
