EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic Delft Gate, also known as Delftsche Poort, located in the heart of Rotterdam, Netherlands. Built in 1764 to the design of renowned architect Pieter de Swart, this magnificent gate was a testament to the city's rich history and cultural heritage. The intricate stonework and elaborate carvings adorning the gate are a sight to behold, reflecting the artistic sensibilities of the 18th century. Unfortunately, the Delft Gate did not withstand the test of time. In 1939, the gate was dismantled due to the expansion of the port. Tragically, the removed stones were later damaged beyond repair during World War II bombing raids. However, in 1995, a new artistic reconstruction of the gate was constructed using a steel frame. The Nieuwe Delftse Poort, as it is now known, stands proudly as a symbol of Rotterdam's resilience and commitment to preserving its history. This photograph, taken in 1903, offers a glimpse into the past, providing us with a tangible connection to the history and culture of Rotterdam and the Netherlands. The Delft Gate, with its intricate stonework and historic significance, continues to captivate visitors and inspire awe, reminding us of the importance of preserving our heritage for future generations.
