EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the genealogy of the powerful House Menduza-Moctezuma, a significant lineage in the history of the Aztec civilization during the 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries in Mesoamerica. The genealogy is illustrated with portraits of key figures from left to right. At the far left is Tezozomoc, the Tlatoani (ruler) of Azcapotzalco, a prominent city-state that was a major rival to Tenochtitlan, the capital city of the Aztec Empire. Tezozomoc is depicted holding an arrow and a bow, symbols of his warrior status. Next to him is Quaquahpitzuac, who is believed to be the father of Moctezuma I, the famous Aztec ruler who faced the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés in the early 16th century. Quaquahpitzuac is shown wearing a feather headdress and holding a shield. Moctezuma I, also known as Motecuhzoma Xocoyotl or Montezuma the Young, is the central figure in the genealogy. He is depicted wearing the regal attire of a Huey Tlatoani, complete with a feathered headdress and a mantle adorned with precious stones. The genealogy continues with Moctezuma II, who ruled during the Spanish conquest, and other members of the House Menduza-Moctezuma. This print is a valuable historical document that provides insight into the political and social structure of the Aztec civilization during a pivotal era in Mesoamerican history.
