This striking photograph captures Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Edmund Yeamans Walcott Henderson shortly after his appointment as the new Chief Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police in 1869. Henderson's distinguished career began in 1847 when he was appointed as the head of the penal colony in Western Australia. After 13 years of effective governance in the colony, Henderson returned to England and was subsequently appointed to the prestigious position of chairman of the board of directors of convict prisons. In 1869, Henderson's impressive record of leadership and administrative abilities caught the attention of the British government, leading to his appointment as the Chief Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. He succeeded the late Sir Richard Mayne, who had held the position since its inception in 1829.
