EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored illustration, drawn and lithographed by Paul Mercuri with text by Camille Bonnard, depicts a young Italian cavalryman from the 14th century. The intricately detailed costume reflects the grandeur and opulence of the Italian aristocracy during this period. The cavalryman wears a tall, conical bonnet adorned with a gold band and ermine trim, a symbol of nobility and wealth. Over his bonnet is a tabard, a short, fitted jacket, also trimmed with ermine and fastened with a gold clasp. The tabard is worn over a white tunic and hose, which are held up by a wide belt with a large buckle. The cavalryman's legs are covered in hose, which are held up by iron spurs attached to his boots. His arms are protected by a gambeson, a quilted jacket, and he wears a gauntlet on his right hand. The illustration also depicts a small pouch attached to his belt, which may have contained essential items for the cavalryman on the battlefield. The young Italian cavalryman's appearance is reminiscent of the portraits of famous figures from the period, such as Francesco Petrarch and the depictions of the Triumph of Death. This illustration is a testament to the fashion and history of the 14th century, providing a glimpse into the world of the Italian aristocracy during this time. The illustration is from the book "Historical Costumes from the 12th to 15th Centuries" published by Levy Fils in Paris in 1860. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the illustration are a result of the handcolored lithograph technique used by Paul Mercuri. This unique and beautiful artwork is a valuable resource for those studying the history of fashion and costume during the medieval period.
