Wolseley motor launch under way, 1914. Creator: Kirk & Sons of Cowes
Wolseley motor launch under way, 1914. The Wolseley Motors company, a British motor vehicle manufacturer founded in early 1901 by Vickers, also built marine power-units for a variety of watercraft. At first engines for launches were made in partnership with the well-known manufacturers, the Teddington Launch Works, to supply the launches. Demand for marine engines grew and Wolseley also designed and manufactured engines for hydroplanes, cruisers, passenger ferries and lifeboats. Many of the larger vessels were built by S. E. Saunders Ltd. at Cowes, Isle-of-Wight

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Wolseley motor launch in full motion on the water, taken back in 1914. The Wolseley Motors company, renowned for its British motor vehicles, expanded its expertise to include marine power-units for various types of watercraft. Initially collaborating with the esteemed Teddington Launch Works, they supplied engines for launches. However, as demand grew, Wolseley ventured into designing and manufacturing engines for hydroplanes, cruisers, passenger ferries, and lifeboats. The impressive vessel depicted here was constructed by S. E. Saunders Ltd. , situated at Cowes on the Isle of Wight – a location known for its shipbuilding heritage. This monochrome image captures the essence of early 20th-century transportation as it combines both road and water transport elements seamlessly. The Kirk & Sons of Cowes are credited with creating this remarkable photograph that immortalizes not only the sleek design of the motor launch but also pays homage to Edgar WP Kirk and William Umpleby Kirk's engineering prowess. As we admire this historic snapshot frozen in time, let us appreciate how Wolseley Motors' innovation extended beyond land-based automobiles to conquer new frontiers on the open seas.
