NASA F-8A Crusader Supercritical Wing Aircraft, 1973. Creator: NASA
NASA F-8A Crusader Supercritical Wing Aircraft, 1973. A Vought F-8A Crusader was selected by NASA as the testbed aircraft (designated TF-8A) to install an experimental Supercritical Wing in place of the conventional wing. The unique design of the Supercritical Wing reduces the effect of shock waves on the upper surface near Mach 1, which in turn reduces drag. In this photograph a Vought F-8A Crusader is shown being used as a flying testbed for an experimental Supercritical Wing airfoil. The smooth fairing of the fiberglass glove with the wing is illustrated in this view

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the NASA F-8A Crusader Supercritical Wing Aircraft from 1973. Selected by NASA as a testbed aircraft, the Vought F-8A Crusader (designated TF-8A) was chosen to replace its conventional wing with an experimental Supercritical Wing. The innovative design of this Supercritical Wing aimed to minimize the impact of shock waves on the upper surface near Mach 1, ultimately reducing drag. In this image, we witness a Vought F-8A Crusader in action as it serves as a flying testbed for the experimental Supercritical Wing airfoil. Notably, the smooth fairing of the fiberglass glove with the wing is beautifully illustrated here. This photograph not only represents advancements in aerodynamics and aviation during the 1970s but also symbolizes America's commitment to space exploration and scientific progress. As part of NASA's endeavors, this aircraft played a crucial role in testing new technologies that would enhance flight performance and efficiency. With its vibrant colors and attention to detail, this print captures both the excitement and significance of aerospace research conducted by NASA during this era. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of knowledge in order to push boundaries further into space travel and exploration.
