Jennie Baines speaking in Trafalgar Square, 1908, (1947). Jennie Baines (1866-1951), British-Australian campaigner for womens suffrage, addressing a mass rally of Suffragettes in central London on 12 December 1908, following her release from Armley Gaol in Leeds. She had been convicted of unlawful assembly, and was the first Suffragette to be tried by a jury. She was found guilty and sentenced to 6 weeks imprisonment - her release was celebrated by a brass band and a procession of Suffragettes as she was carried through the streets of London in an open carriage on her way to Trafalgar Square.
