EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by the local photographer V.V. Lanin in the late 1860s or early 1870s, depicts a Gilyak merchant named V.P. Myl'nikov. The image is part of an album containing 154 photographs that Myl'nikov presented to the Imperial Public Library of St. Petersburg upon his return from the Amur region. The collection offers a unique glimpse into the diverse subjects of Blagoveshchensk, Nikolaevsk-na-Amure, and Vladivostok, as well as native life and culture, nature, and commerce along the Amur, Ussuri, and Suifun Rivers. In this photograph, the merchant is shown seated cross-legged, wearing a full-length tunic and braided clothing. His long hair is tied back, and he wears a hat adorned with intricate plaits. The merchant's posture is calm and confident, and his gaze is directed away from the camera, adding an air of mystery to the image. The photograph is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Gilyak people, also known as the Nivkh, and the meeting of frontiers between Eastern and Western influences in the Far East during the 19th century. This historic portrait is an essential resource for anthropologists, ethnographers, and historians studying the clothing, fashion, and traditions of the indigenous peoples of Russia.
