What Luck! a Bottle of Champagne

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that showcases the front and reverse of a promotional card for the Bon Marche Department Stores in Paris, dating back to around 1895. This colorful lithograph, created by an anonymous French School artist from the 19th century, is now part of a private collection. The Bon Marche Department Stores were truly revolutionary in their time. Founded by Aristide Boucicaut and his wife Marguerite, these stores transformed the concept of shopping and retailing in France. They introduced numerous innovations such as fixed prices, home delivery, extensive product choices, guarantees on exchanges or returns, catalogues, mail order services, and advertising. This particular promotional card was one among many produced weekly to entice customers to return frequently to the shops. The cards were immensely popular with families as they provided an enjoyable experience for all members. Husbands could relax in reading rooms while their wives made purchases; children received balloons and beautifully designed cards. The illustration on this card depicts the iconic Bon Marche store located on rue du Bac. Designed by architect Louis Charles Boileau and engineer Armand Moisant between 1870 and 1887, it became not only the largest department store in Paris but also held that title worldwide. These developments democratized consumption during that era by empowering women with newfound freedom to shop independently. The Bon Marche's glamorous interiors further enhanced this enjoyable experience for shoppers. Overall, "What Luck! A Bottle of Champagne" captures both the historical significance and allure of one of Paris' most influential department stores from over a century ago.
