Masters of the seas, 1915 (oil on canvas)

7339102 Masters of the seas, 1915 (oil on canvas) by Wyllie, William Lionel (1851-1931); 151.8x274.3 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: William Lionel Wyllie
A painting showing the ships of the First Battle-Cruiser Squadron in 1915, in line of battle against the setting sun. The leading vessel could be one of the battleships Ajax, Audacious, or Centurion, since they were the only ones with tripod foremasts and no hull embrasures. They are shown with anti-torpedo nets that were removed in 1915-1916. The vessels astern are battle cruisers, probably of the Indefatigable class. Battle-cruisers were complementary to the dreadnought battleship. Carrying similar-sized guns they achieved greater speeds, and could take swift evasive action by compromising on the thickness of their armour.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil on canvas painting by William Lionel Wyllie captures the majestic power and beauty of the ships of the First Battle-Cruiser Squadron in 1915. The vessels are depicted in a dramatic line of battle against the backdrop of a setting sun, showcasing their imposing presence on the open seas. The leading vessel, with its tripod foremast and lack of hull embrasures, is likely one of the battleships 'Ajax', 'Audacious', or 'Centurion'. Behind it follow battle cruisers, possibly from the 'Indefatigable' class. These ships were designed to complement dreadnought battleships, boasting similar-sized guns but greater speed and agility due to lighter armor. The attention to detail in this painting is remarkable - from the anti-torpedo nets that were later removed to the billowing smoke and fluttering flags that bring life to the scene. It serves as a vivid reminder of a pivotal moment in naval history during World War I. Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this artwork not only celebrates maritime prowess but also pays homage to an era when these mighty vessels ruled the waves with grace and strength. A true masterpiece that continues to captivate viewers with its timeless allure.
