The first traffic moves across the new bridge over the River Tawe at Swansea on Monday

The first traffic moves across the new bridge over the River Tawe at Swansea on Monday.
The bridge was open traffic for the first time today and the New Cut Bridge was closed to traffic in preparation for demolition. In actual fact the new bridge is only half a bridge, the second half will be built on the site at present occupied by the New Cut Bridge.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The historic moment unfolds as the first traffic gracefully traverses the newly constructed bridge over the majestic River Tawe in Swansea. This photo print, taken on Monday, November 19th, 1962 by Barnes from Memory Lane Prints, captures a significant milestone in Welsh infrastructure development. The image showcases a bustling scene of cars and buses eagerly making their way across this architectural marvel. The iron bridge stands tall and proud, symbolizing progress and connectivity for the people of Swansea. However, little do they know that this half-bridge is merely a precursor to an even greater feat of engineering yet to come. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, it becomes apparent that change is imminent. The New Cut Bridge adjacent to it has been closed down in preparation for its eventual demolition. Soon enough, construction will commence on the second half of this magnificent structure right where the old bridge currently resides. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of both past achievements and future aspirations. It encapsulates not only the physical transformation taking place but also represents Wales' unwavering spirit to embrace innovation while preserving its rich heritage. Join us on this journey down memory lane as we celebrate this iconic moment in Welsh history – when two halves became one whole.
