HAMMERSMITH BRIDGE, Barnes, Greater London. This decorative suspension bridge is seen here from the riverbank. It was built in 1887, designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette, the distinguished civil engineer who was also responsible for London's sewage system as well as a number of other bridges. Photographed by Henry Taunt in 1895.

Severn Railway Bridge EAW038126
The Severn Railway Bridge, Sharpness, Gloucestershire, from the south, July 1951. The Golucester-Sharpness canal is in the foreground, crossed by a swing-bridge. The bridge was built in the 1870s to bring coal from the Forest of Dean to Sharpness Docks. It was badly damaged by collisions and was demolished in the 1960s.
