EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of Fisher Bendix Factory, Kirkby. It was taken on Friday, January 7th, 1972, when the factory workers voted overwhelmingly to continue their occupation of the premises. Established in 1961 as a purpose-built facility for Fisher and Ludlow's domestic appliance division, this factory employed up to 3,000 workers who produced Bendix washing machines, Fisholow stainless steel sinks, and pressed steel radiators. However, by the mid-1970s, five different owners had failed to generate any trading profit from the factory. In an effort to salvage this struggling industrial hub in Merseyside's Knowsley region of England, Kirby Manufacturing and Engineering was formed in 1974 with government funding. This cooperative venture aimed to empower the workers by allowing them greater control over their workplace. The image showcases a group of determined factory workers raising their hands during a crucial vote that would shape their future. Their united stance reflects both resilience and determination amidst ongoing disputes within the manufacturing sector. Wiggy's expertly captured photograph serves as a poignant reminder of an era marked by labor struggles and industrial unrest. It symbolizes not just a single moment frozen in time but also represents the collective strength of working-class communities fighting for better conditions and job security during challenging times.
