EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of a daring and disruptive campaign led by militant members of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) in London's Cockspur Street during the early 1910s. The suffragettes, who were fighting for women's right to vote, resorted to smashing windows as a form of protest against the government's inaction on the issue. In this image, the broken windows of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, as well as those of Cawthorn & Hutt's circulating library, are boarded up in the wake of the damage. The campaign of window-breaking was a bold and provocative tactic employed by the militant wing of the suffrage movement, aimed at drawing attention to their cause and putting pressure on the authorities to take action. The scene in this photograph serves as a powerful reminder of the determination and resilience of the suffragettes, who would eventually succeed in securing the right to vote for women in the UK with the passage of the Representation of the People Act in 1918.
