EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor painting depicts the Antarctic buttercup, Ranunculus biternatus, created by the acclaimed artist Sydney Parkinson during Captain James Cook's historic first voyage across the Pacific Ocean from 1768 to 1771. The voyage, aboard the HMS Endeavour, took Cook and his crew through uncharted waters, including Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of South America and the Antarctic Circle. The Antarctic buttercup is a member of the Ranunculaceae family, which is an order of flowering plants commonly known as ranunculales. This particular species is an eudicot, meaning it is a type of dicotyledon, or flowering plant with two seed leaves. The buttercup's scientific name, Ranunculus biternatus, refers to its two-lobed leaves and its native habitat in the Antarctic region. Parkinson's meticulous illustration captures the delicate beauty of the buttercup's white petals, which contrast sharply against the dark background of the Antarctic landscape. The artist's attention to detail is evident in the veining on the leaves and the intricate texture of the petals. Parkinson also made an error in his identification, labeling the plant as Ranunculus flaccidus, but this mistake does not detract from the artistic merit of the piece. This watercolor painting is a testament to the natural wonders that Cook and his crew discovered during their groundbreaking journey. It offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the world was still largely unknown and exploration was a source of great excitement and discovery.
