EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the United States Air Force (USAF) Martin NRB-57D Canberra, serial number 53-3973, in circa 1963. The NRB-57D Canberra was initially accepted by the 4080 Strategic Reconnaissance Wing on May 31, 1956, and was later converted to a WB-57D in 1959-61 for use in various research programs at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. The aircraft was re-designated NRB-57D when used in these research programs. Unfortunately, on January 4, 1964, the NRB-57D Canberra, 53-3973, suffered a catastrophic incident when its wings failed during flight near Dayton, Ohio. The plane came down in a schoolyard, forcing the grounding of the entire WB/NRB-57D fleet. It is reported that in late autumn of 1958, this same aircraft made a full-fuel landing during an emergency immediately after take-off at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas. Upon landing, the right main landing gear hit the runway, causing the wing to separate at the engine root. Despite its tragic end, this NRB-57D Canberra played an essential role in the USAF's strategic reconnaissance and research programs. Its legacy serves as a reminder of the advancements and challenges faced during the Cold War era in aviation technology.
