EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, the Tupolev Tu-104A aircraft with the registration number CCCP-L5445 (MSN 8350401) of Aeroflot is seen at Keflavik Naval Air Station in Iceland. This Soviet airliner made headlines in September 1959 when it became the second Tu-104A to visit the United States. The first stop was at London Heathrow Airport for refueling, followed by a second stop at Keflavik NAS. On board this flight was Soviet Foreign Minister, Andrei Gromyko, who traveled to the US for diplomatic talks. The exact date of this photograph is uncertain, as it could depict either the outward or return journey. The first Tu-104A to fly to the US, on September 4, was registered as CCCP-L5438. This significant visit marked a new era in international aviation and diplomacy, bridging the gap between the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War era.
