Prince Henry and Waldemar of Prussia

Prince Waldemar of Prussia (1889-1945) with his father, Prince Heinrich (Henry) of Prussia (1862-1929) at Balmoral in the 1890s. Waldemar was the eldest son of Henry and Princess Irene of Hesse. He was a haemophilia sufferer like his younger brother Heinrich, who had died at the age of four. Though his health was precarious and he often came close to death, he managed to reach the age of fifty-six. He was taken ill in the closing months of the Second World War while trying to escape the advancing Soviet Army, and died because the clinic where he was taken could not perform blood transfusions. Father and son are shown here wearing the Highland dress traditionally worn while at the royal residence of Balmoral. Date: 1890s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures a rare moment between Prince Henry and his eldest son, Waldemar of Prussia, at Balmoral in the 1890s. The image showcases the father and son duo dressed in traditional Highland attire, reflecting their royal residence's customs. Waldemar was not just any prince; he was a haemophilia sufferer like his younger brother Heinrich, who tragically passed away at a tender age of four. Despite facing numerous health challenges throughout his life and coming close to death several times, Waldemar defied the odds and lived until the age of fifty-six. However, fate had other plans for him during the tumultuous days of World War II. In an attempt to escape from the advancing Soviet Army, Waldemar fell ill and sought medical help but unfortunately could not receive blood transfusions due to limitations at the clinic where he was taken. This marked the end of his remarkable journey filled with struggles against adversity. As we gaze upon this touching photograph frozen in time, we are reminded of Prince Henry's unwavering love for his son and Waldemar's courageous spirit that endured till his last breath. Their bond transcends generations and serves as a testament to resilience amidst life's trials.
