Man (Turner) playing golf at Gyantse, from a fascinating album which reveals new details on a little-known campaign in which a British military force brushed aside Tibetan defences to capture Lhasa, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was concerned over Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The expedition eventually gained a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, but whether the effort was worth the return is certainly up for debate. This album came by direct descent from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service (Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald). The photographs show various elements of the expedition: military, monasteries, scenery, towns and locals. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
Man (Turner) Playing Golf at Gyantse: A Glimpse into the Uncharted Terrain of the 1904 Tibet Expedition This photograph of Man (Turner) taking a swing at a golf ball on the greens of Gyantse, Tibet, is but a small piece of a larger story. Hidden within the pages of an intriguing album, this image offers a unique perspective on the little-known 1904 Tibet Expedition, a military campaign that saw a British force successfully capture Lhasa, the spiritual and political heart of Tibet, despite Tibetan defenses and Chinese claims to sovereignty. The Tibet Expedition, led by Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service, was launched from India under the auspices of Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India. With growing concerns over Russian influence and perceived advancements toward the border, Curzon saw the expedition as a means to secure British interests in the region. This album, which has been passed down through the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, an ADC to Younghusband, offers a rare and intimate look at the expedition. The photographs within its pages capture various aspects of the campaign, from military scenes and monasteries to breathtaking scenery, bustling towns, and local inhabitants. Man (Turner) playing golf at Gyantse serves as a reminder of the unexpected moments that unfolded amidst the larger political machinations. The game of golf, an unlikely pastime in such a remote and challenging terrain, underscores the human element of the expedition and the soldiers' experiences in this far-off land. The success of the Tibet Expedition brought about a series of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time. However, the question of whether the effort was worth the return remains a subject of debate. This intriguing album offers a glimpse into a fascinating chapter of history, shedding light on a little-known campaign and the complexities of the geopolitical landscape of the early 20th century.
