High jump with spectators, from a fascinating album which reveals new details on a little-known campaign in which a British military force brushed aside Tibetan defences to capture Lhasa, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was concerned over Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The expedition eventually gained a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, but whether the effort was worth the return is certainly up for debate. This album came by direct descent from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service (Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald). The photographs show various elements of the expedition: military, monasteries, scenery, towns and locals. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from 1904, we witness the thrilling moment of a high jump competition taking place during the Tibet Expedition, an intriguing campaign led by British military forces to assert influence in Tibet, which was then under Chinese control. The expedition, spearheaded by Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service, was backed by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was growing increasingly concerned over Russian influence and perceived advancements toward the border. The album from which this photograph originates is a fascinating firsthand account of the expedition, passed down through the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, who served as ADC (Aide-de-Camp) to Colonel Younghusband. The collection offers a unique glimpse into the various aspects of the expedition, including military scenes, monasteries, breathtaking scenery, and local populations. The high jump event in the photograph is a testament to the spirit of camaraderie and athleticism that accompanied the British forces as they traversed the challenging terrain of Tibet. Spectators, both military personnel and local Tibetans, gather around the jump site, their expressions filled with anticipation and excitement. The image offers a rare insight into the human side of the expedition, providing a counterpoint to the more militaristic and political aspects of the campaign. The success of the Tibet Expedition remains a subject of debate, with some arguing that the concessions gained were worth the significant resources and manpower invested, while others view it as a costly and ultimately fruitless endeavor. Regardless of its ultimate impact, this photograph and the accompanying album offer a valuable window into a little-known chapter of British colonial history.
