British man on a white horse (Sunstar) with Tibetan (Tsewangdi, nicknamed Bill Sykes) on right, from a fascinating album which reveals new details on a little-known campaign in which a British military force brushed aside Tibetan defences to capture Lhasa, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was concerned over Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The expedition eventually gained a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, but whether the effort was worth the return is certainly up for debate. This album came by direct descent from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service (Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald). The photographs show various elements of the expedition: military, monasteries, scenery, towns and locals. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Captain William Charles Hayman, an Assistant Deputy Commissioner to Colonel Francis Younghusband, is seen riding proudly on a white horse alongside Tsewangdi, a Tibetan man nicknamed "Bill Sykes," during the British Tibet Expedition of 1904. This expedition, led by Colonel Younghusband of the Indian Political Service and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, aimed to counteract perceived Russian influence and supposed advances toward the border. The album from which this image originates offers a captivating glimpse into this little-known campaign. The British military force, accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald, successfully brushed aside Tibetan defenses and gained various concessions from the region, nominally under Chinese control at the time. However, the value of this expedition is a subject of ongoing debate. The photographs in this album showcase various aspects of the expedition, including military scenes, monasteries, breathtaking scenery, towns, and local inhabitants. The image of Captain Hayman and Tsewangdi on horseback encapsulates the complex and intriguing dynamics between the British military and the Tibetan people during this period of colonial expansion. This rare and fascinating collection provides valuable insights into a significant moment in the history of British-Tibetan relations. This photograph is an invaluable historical record, offering a glimpse into the past and shedding light on the intricacies of colonial-era diplomacy. It is a poignant reminder of the rich cultural exchanges and tensions that shaped the relationship between the British and Tibetan peoples during this time. The album, which has been passed down through the Hayman family, is a testament to the enduring importance of preserving historical records for future generations.
