EDITORS COMMENTS
The Taking of Zutphen, Siege of Zutphen (present day Gelderland, Netherlands), 1591: A Pivotal Moment in the Eighty Years War and the Anglo-Spanish War This evocative image captures the decisive moment of the Battle of Zutphen, which took place between May 19 and 30, 1591, during the Eighty Years War (1568-1648) and the Anglo-Spanish War (1585-1604). The English troops, expertly disguised as farmers and women, are seen approaching the fortification with seemingly innocuous items such as butter, cheese, and eggs, while concealing their weapons. The deception was part of a cunning plan to infiltrate the enemy's defenses. Once inside, the disguised soldiers drew their weapons and attacked, taking the unsuspecting Spanish guards by surprise. With the gates now open, more English troops were able to enter, and the siege of Zutphen was over. The Battle of Zutphen was a significant turning point in the Eighty Years War, which marked the Dutch struggle for independence from Spanish rule. The event showcased the strategic prowess of the English forces and their ability to employ unconventional tactics to achieve victory. This 16th-century print by TERRY PARKER, available from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of conflict, deception, and surprise. The image invites us to reflect on the complexities of war and the importance of strategic planning and adaptability in achieving military success.
