EDITORS COMMENTS
An Incident in the Siege of Leith, near Edinburgh, 6 April 1560: A poignant and chaotic moment from the Siege of Leith, which took place on the outskirts of Edinburgh, Scotland, on 6 April 1560. This event marked a tragic interruption to the supposed truce between the English and French forces during the European Wars of Religion. In the background, tents and camps of both sides can be seen, with soldiers preparing for the imminent resumption of hostilities. In the foreground, a soldier on the English side, clad in armor and helmet, readies his pilke, a type of pike or spear, as a French soldier, wearing a Roman Catholic cap and carrying a pistol, fires his weapon in defiance of the ceasefire. The unexpected volley of gunfire resulted in the Battle of Restalrig, during which many men on both sides lost their lives. This evocative image, captured by Terry Parker from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the raw and brutal realities of warfare during the 16th century.
