EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "A Dive into the Depths: An Encounter with Sharks and Anglerfish" This handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1795, invites us on an underwater adventure to explore the wonders of the deep sea. The image showcases a diverse array of fascinating shark species and an anglerfish, each meticulously rendered in intricate detail. In the foreground, we find the Angular Roughshark (Oxynotus centrina), a vulnerable species with a unique, angular body and rough skin. Its elongated snout and sharp teeth make it an efficient predator. The Angelshark (Squatina squatina) lies hidden in the sand, camouflaged, with its wing-like pectoral fins spread out. This critically endangered species is known for its flat body shape and distinctive dorsal fin. Next to the Angelshark, we spot the Tope Shark (Galeorhinus galeus), a powerful and agile predator with a distinctive black spot on its back. This vulnerable species is known for its speed and acrobatic displays. The Angler or Monkfish (Lophius piscatorius) is an intriguing creature with a bioluminescent lure on its head, used to attract prey in the dark depths. The engraving serves as a testament to the richness and diversity of marine life, providing a glimpse into the wonders of the deep sea that captivated the imagination of children over two centuries ago. Today, it is a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect these magnificent creatures and ensure their survival for future generations.
