Diver underwater off the coast of Malta

Diver swimming underwater as part of an inflatable house project. The house was anchored to the seabed, some 50 feet deep, in Paradise Bay, off the coast of Malta. It was equipped with lighting, telephone and immersion heaters with which the inhabitants could make hot drinks. It was constructed by teams of engineers and diving enthusiasts from Imperial College of Science and Technology and Enfield College of Technology. It was 9ft long and 6ft wide, constructed from rubberised material on a steel frame, and weighed around 500 lb. The team leader was David Baume who hoped it would be the first of a series of low cost underwater living spaces from which scientists could explore the seas. David and some other team members were able to spend a night 30 feet below the surface. The following day a severe storm caused the house to collapse. Date: 1969

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this underwater photograph, a diver explores the depths of Paradise Bay off the coast of Malta in 1969. The diver is part of an innovative team of engineers and diving enthusiasts from Imperial College of Science and Technology and Enfield College of Technology, who constructed an inflatable underwater house as part of an expedition to study the seabed. The house, equipped with lighting, a telephone, and immersion heaters, was anchored to the seabed, some 50 feet deep, and provided a unique living space for researchers to explore the underwater world. Measuring 9ft long and 6ft wide, the house was constructed from rubberized material on a steel frame and weighed around 500 lb. Team leader David Baume, along with some other team members, bravely spent a night 30 feet below the surface, making history as the first inhabitants of this underwater abode. However, their pioneering efforts were short-lived as a severe storm caused the house to collapse the following day. The photograph captures the diver in the midst of his exploration, with his gear including flippers, breathing apparatus, and other essential equipment visible in the frame. The image offers a glimpse into the 1960s underwater research scene, showcasing the determination and ingenuity of the team as they pushed the boundaries of underwater living. This photograph is a captivating reminder of the spirit of discovery and innovation that characterized underwater exploration in the late 1960s. It represents an important chapter in the history of underwater research and the development of technologies that have enabled us to better understand and protect our oceans.
