This image, taken from The Malay Archipelago by Alfred Russel Wallace, published in London in 1874 (Plate opposite page 472), depicts Dobbo, a local inhabitant of the Aru Islands in Indonesia, during the trading season. The camp in the background, surrounded by lush vegetation, serves as a testament to the rich cultural exchange that took place between the indigenous people of the Malay Archipelago and European explorers during the nineteenth century. The focus of the photograph, however, is on Dobbo, who is shown wearing traditional attire and holding a palm branch. The palm tree in the foreground, identified as a member of the Arecales order within the monocotyledonous Angiosperms, or flowering plants, adds to the tropical ambiance of the scene. The Aru Islands, located in the Moluccas, were a significant part of Wallace's extensive explorations in Asia, and this image offers a glimpse into the daily life of the people who inhabited this region during the 19th century.
