EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 290 from John James Audubon's renowned work, "Birds of America," features the captivating image of a Dunlin, Calidris alpina, in its striking natural habitat. This double elephant folio print, hand-coloured aquatint engraving was produced by R. Havell (& Son) in London between 1834 and 1835. The Dunlin, a wader belonging to the Charadriiformes order and the Scolopacidae family, is depicted with meticulous attention to detail. Its slender body, marked with a series of fine streaks, is contrasted by the bold, dark stripes on its belly. The Dunlin's distinctive, long, down-curved bill is prominently displayed, adding to its distinctive appearance. The Dunlin is shown perched on the edge of a sandy shore, surrounded by the remnants of a crab shell, which adds a sense of scale and texture to the image. The water behind the bird shimmers in the daylight, reflecting the vibrant colors of the scene. Audubon's masterful illustration captures the essence of the Dunlin in its daytime habitat, showcasing its beauty and grace. As a sauropsid, or reptile-descended bird, the Dunlin is part of the Aves class, which includes all modern birds. The intricacy of the engraving and the artistry of the hand-colouring bring the Dunlin to life, offering a glimpse into the natural world of over 180 years ago.
