Calidris is a genus of small wading birds, commonly known as sandpipers. These birds are found in many parts of the world and are highly adapted to their environment. They have long legs and webbed feet which allow them to move quickly over wet surfaces. They feed on insects, crustaceans, mollusks, worms and other small aquatic creatures. Calidris sandpipers have a unique breeding behavior; they form large flocks during the breeding season and migrate long distances in search of food. During migration they can travel up to 10,000 miles in a single season. These birds are also known for their ability to detect prey from far away using their excellent vision and hearing capabilities. Calidris sandpipers play an important role in maintaining healthy wetlands ecosystems by helping to control insect populations that can damage crops or spread disease-causing organisms.
