The Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) is a common resident and is widespread throughout Africa except in arid regions. It is usually found by shallow water bodies including marine, estuaries, shallow rivers and lakes and marshes and swamps. Although it's primary diet is fish it will also feed on other marine animals as well as the occasional rodent. they are a monogamous species that often nest colonially and in small heronries.
