Farewell to Civilisation: Captain Robert Falcon Scott and His Team Bid Adieu to New Zealand Aboard the Terra Nova, En Route to Antarctica (1911) In this evocative image from the early 20th century, we witness the poignant moment as Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his intrepid team, determined to be the first humans to reach the South Pole, bid farewell to civilisation from the deck of their ship, Terra Nova, as it sets sail from Lyttelton Harbour, New Zealand. The date is December 1910.
