The Tenements (Cherry-Garrard, Bowers, Oates, Meares, Atkinson), 9 October 1911, (1913). Bunks in the hut of Assistant zoologist Apsley Cherry-Garrard, Lieutenant Henry Robertson Bowers, Captain Lawrence Oates, Cecil H Meares, medical officer Edward L Atkinson. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intimate living quarters of the brave explorers who embarked on Captain Robert Falcon Scott's final expedition to the Antarctic. Taken on 9 October 1911, it showcases the bunks in Assistant zoologist Apsley Cherry-Garrard's hut, where Lieutenant Henry Robertson Bowers, Captain Lawrence Oates, Cecil H Meares, and medical officer Edward L Atkinson also resided. The Terra Nova Expedition was a remarkable scientific endeavor that aimed to continue the important work initiated during Scott's previous Discovery Expedition. The team consisted of experts from various fields including geology, zoology, surgery, photography, engineering, skiing expertise, meteorology and physics. Scott had an ambitious goal - to be the first person to reach the geographic South Pole. However, upon their arrival on 17 January 1912 after enduring treacherous blizzards and dwindling supplies along their journey, they discovered that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had beaten them by a month. Tragically delayed by harsh weather conditions and running out of provisions on their return journey from the Pole; Scott along with Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, and Petty Officer Edgar Evans succumbed to their fate at the end of March. Their bodies were found eight months later alongside poignant diaries documenting their valiant efforts. This photograph is part of "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume I published in London in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , which serves as a testament to these courageous men who sacrificed everything for exploration and scientific advancement.
