Stanley and Tippoo Tib leaving Matadi, 1887

Engraving showing Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) (centre right on horse) and Tippoo Tib (1837-1905) (right of Stanley, with sword) leaving Matadi, on the Congo river, 1887. On the left of the image can be seen Stanleys porters carrying general baggage as well as the various parts of a sectional boat. Stanley was then undertaking an expedition to find and, if needs be, rescue the Emin Pasha, the Governor of the Egyptian Equatorial Province. Stanley succeeded in this enterprise, early in 1888. Tippoo Tib (1837-1905), whose real name was Hamid ibn Mohammed, was an African-Arab adventurer and warrior, who controlled a large section of Central Africa. His aid to Stanley and other European explorers was invaluable in their exploration and exploitation of the region
