EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a rare glimpse into the past, showcasing a page from the original Pawpaw Apple Manuscript by the renowned naturalist William Bartram. Dated back to the late 18th century, this manuscript is taken from Book 1 of Bartram's "Travels Through North and South Carolina, Georgia, East and West Florida," where he meticulously documented his expedition to the southern colonies and the unique flora he encountered along the way. The featured illustration is of the Pawpaw Apple (Asimina triloba), a native fruit tree belonging to the Annonaceae family, which is indigenous to North America. Bartram's detailed description of the plant reads, "This tree produces a fruit, which is of a very agreeable and delicious taste, and is called by the Indians Paw-paw. The fruit is about the size of a large apple, and of a roundish figure, with a smooth, yellowish-green rind, which is easily removed, and a juicy, white, and sweet pulp, enclosed in a large number of seeds." As an angiosperm, dicot, and eudicot, the Pawpaw Apple is a flowering plant that falls under the Magnoliophyta division. It is also a member of the Rosales order, Rosid subclass, Magnoliidae family, and Magnoliales order. This intriguing fruit is a testament to the rich biodiversity that Bartram discovered during his travels and serves as an essential record of the natural history of North America.
