EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this collection of railway locomotives from the mid-19th century, featuring engines from the Great Western, North London, Chatham and Dover, St Helens, and Sligo Leitrim & Northern County Railways. Beginning with the Great Western Railway's "Theodore the Tank," built in 1837, this engine was an early example of a tank locomotive, measuring just 12 feet 6 inches in length and 5 feet 6 inches in height. Its 2-2-2 wheel arrangement allowed it to carry water and fuel in its own tanks, making it more efficient for short hauls. Next, the North London Railway's "E Class" locomotive, built in 1863, boasted a powerful 2-4-0 wheel arrangement and a length of 23 feet 6 inches. With a total weight of 25 tons, this engine could reach impressive speeds of up to 35 miles per hour. The Chatham and Dover Railway's "Class C" locomotive, built in 1865, was a 2-4-0 engine measuring 23 feet 10 inches in length and 6 feet 10 inches in height. Its 3,500 pounds of boiler pressure and 1,200 horsepower enabled it to haul heavy loads with ease. The St Helens and Sligo Leitrim & Northern County Railway's "Class A" locomotive, built in 1875, was a 2-4-0 engine with a length of 23 feet 10 inches and a height of 7 feet 6 inches. Its 1,500 horsepower and 2,500 pounds of boiler pressure made it a formidable force on the rails. Lastly, this collection includes a scene from 1885 featuring Her Majesty's Mails train, pulled by a locomotive from the North Western Railway, traveling through Canada. The exact engine model is not known, but it showcases the impressive progress made in railway technology by the late 19th century. These illustrations offer a glimpse into the evolution of railway locomotives during a pivotal period in transportation history. Each engine is accompanied by key details and measurements, providing valuable insights into their design and capabilities.
