EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Cosmo Gordon Lang, 1st Baron Lang of Lambeth, Archbishop of Canterbury from 1928 to 1942, is seen getting into a car with a graceful bouquet of flowers in his hand. Dressed in his ecclesiastical robes, the Archbishop exudes a sense of dignity and tranquility, as if ready to embark on an important journey. The year is not explicitly stated in the image, but based on Lang's tenure as Archbishop, this photograph was likely taken between 1928 and 1942. Cosmo Gordon Lang was born on February 15, 1864, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was educated at the University of Edinburgh and ordained as a deacon in 1887 and a priest in 1888. Lang's career in the Church of England began in earnest when he was appointed as a curate in London in 1891. He rose through the ranks, becoming Bishop of Stepney in 1910, Bishop of Bristol in 1919, and finally, Archbishop of Canterbury in 1928. During his time as Archbishop, Lang faced numerous challenges, including the rise of fascism in Europe and the Second World War. He was a vocal opponent of Nazi ideology and spoke out against the persecution of Jews and other minority groups. Lang also played a significant role in the ecumenical movement, working to bring about greater unity between different Christian denominations. After his retirement as Archbishop in 1942, Lang continued to be active in the Church and in public life until his death on January 16, 1945. This photograph captures a moment in the life of a man who dedicated himself to the service of his faith and his country, leaving a lasting legacy in the annals of British history.
