The way to Emmaus, no.2, 1914. Creator: William Strang

The way to Emmaus, no.2, 1914. In this scene, the resurrected Christ has found two disciples on the road to Emmaus who are dressed like working-class contemporaries of Strang. A disguised Christ interacts with them and they convince him to travel with them, all the while discussing with sadness the recent event of his death. The road is minimally described, and there is nothing in the distance apart from a few houses on the left. The message of Christ's humanity, surely consistent with Strang's socialist sympathies, is what ultimately counts

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant and powerful print by William Strang (1914), we are transported to a moment of quiet contemplation on the road to Emmaus. The resurrected Christ, disguised as a traveler, walks alongside two disciples who have been discussing his death with sorrow in their hearts. As they journey together, Jesus listens intently to their conversation, offering words of comfort and understanding. Strang's masterful use of drypoint etching creates a sense of intimacy and simplicity, drawing the viewer into this tender scene from Luke's Gospel (Luke 24:13-35). The two disciples are depicted in everyday clothing, emphasizing Christ's humanity and connection to ordinary people. In contrast, the road stretches out before them with minimal description, leaving our attention focused on the emotional exchange between Jesus and his followers. This print is a testament to Strang's socialist sympathies and commitment to depicting the human side of Christianity. By capturing this moment of vulnerability and compassion, he reminds us that even in death, Christ remains present among those who mourned him. 'The Way to Emmaus' (No. 2) is a powerful exploration of faith, hope, and redemption.
