Pyx, 1500-1700, (1881). Creator:s Thomas

Pyx, 1500-1700, (1881). Etching of a carved boxwood pyx, possibly made in Venice or the Balkans, between the 16th and 17th centuries. A pyx is a small round container used to carry the consecrated host (Eucharist), to the sick or those otherwise unable to come to church in order to receive catholic Holy Communion. This example is carved with scenes of the Passion, and has a niello finial and engraved silver gilt rim. From " The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum). EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a beautifully carved pyx, dating back to the 16th or 17th centuries. The pyx is made from boxwood and is believed to have originated in either Venice or the Balkans. Used as a small round container for carrying the consecrated host (Eucharist), this particular pyx was designed for delivering Holy Communion to those unable to attend church, such as the sick. The intricate carvings on the pyx depict scenes of the Passion, capturing the crucifixion of Christ. Its lid features a niello finial and an engraved silver gilt rim, adding decorative elements to its religious purpose. This image comes from "The South Kensington Museum", a book published in 1881 that featured engravings and descriptions of artworks housed at what is now known as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The museum's collection includes various artifacts representing different cultures and time periods. Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington published this book during the 19th century, providing art enthusiasts with detailed illustrations like this one by S Thomas. It serves as both a historical record of religious artifacts and a testament to human craftsmanship throughout history.
