Orestes pursued by the Furies, 1858

Orestes pursued by the Furies, 1858. Lord Palmerston, Leader of the Opposition, is pursued by the Furies. These are John Bright holding the cat o nine tails, Disraeli, the Conservative chancellor of the Exchequer with the birch and the brand, and a third, more schematic, Fury represents Roebuck. This cartoon refers to what Punch called The Battle of the Ballot in which the extension of the franchise was discussed. John Bright and Disraeli were both advocates of the extension, whereas Palmerston just as passionately opposed any such extension. However, as Punch reported, the fight ended with the usual defeat of the attacking forces. From Punch, or the London Charivari, June 19, 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "Orestes pursued by the Furies, 1858" captures a powerful political satire from the 19th century. In this cartoon, Lord Palmerston, Leader of the Opposition, is depicted as Orestes being relentlessly chased by three formidable Furies representing his political adversaries. John Bright holds the cat o' nine tails symbolizing punishment and retribution, while Benjamin Disraeli, the Conservative chancellor of the Exchequer, wields a birch and brand to inflict further torment. The third Fury represents John Arthur Roebuck in a more abstract form. This artwork alludes to Punch's portrayal of "The Battle of the Ballot" which centered around discussions on extending voting rights. Both John Bright and Disraeli were fervent advocates for expanding suffrage, whereas Palmerston vehemently opposed any such extension. Despite their passionate pursuit of change, Punch reports that once again, these reformist forces faced defeat at the hands of those resisting progress. Through this caricature filled with symbolism and wit, we are reminded of the complex dynamics within British politics during this era. It showcases not only differing ideologies but also highlights how entrenched opposition can hinder societal advancements. This black-and-white engraving serves as an important historical artifact reflecting upon key figures such as Lord Palmerston, Benjamin Disraeli, John Arthur Roebuck, and John Bright who played significant roles in shaping Britain's political landscape during that time.
