The Cymreigyddion Festival - chorus singers, 1845. Creator: Unknown
The Cymreigyddion Festival - chorus singers, 1845. Cultural event in Wales. The venerable Eisteddfod of the Welsh was, in olden time, a congress of all the poets and minstrelsy of the country, attended and presided over by the princes and nobles oi the land. It was also a depository for national oral record...The objects of the Cymreigyddion...are the restoration of any relics of ancient Cambrian literature, and the encouragement of literature generally, including History, Science, and Poetry; the improvement of Welsh Music, more immediately in reference to the revival of the beautiful airs of antiquity - the more general use of the triple harp, the national instrument - and the encouragement of Welsh manufactures in flannels and hats. To these has been added the patronage of the fine arts.... From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

The Cymreigyddion Festival - Chorus Singers, 1845 - A Celebration of Welsh Culture and Artistry
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a momentous cultural event in Wales during the 19th century - The Cymreigyddion Festival. Steeped in tradition, this festival was a gathering of poets, minstrels, princes, and nobles who came together to celebrate the rich heritage of Cambrian literature. In this image, we see a group of talented chorus singers dressed in traditional Welsh costumes. Their attire reflects the deep-rooted pride they feel for their country's history and customs. Adorned with elegant hats and clothing that exude gracefulness, these women embody the essence of Welsh culture. The festival aimed not only to preserve ancient Cambrian literature but also to foster literary growth encompassing history, science, poetry, and music. It sought to revive beautiful melodies from antiquity by promoting the use of the triple harp as Wales' national instrument. Additionally, The Cymreigyddion Festival played an instrumental role in supporting Welsh manufactures such as flannels and hats while also extending its patronage towards fine arts. This remarkable engraving from "Illustrated London News" transports us back in time to witness this extraordinary event that brought together individuals dedicated to upholding their cultural heritage through song and artistic expression. As we gaze upon these talented vocalists captured forever on paper by an unknown creator's hand, we are reminded of the enduring power of music as it unites people across generations.
