Coronation 1953, the royal box at Ascot

A scene of excitement in the royal box at Royal Ascot when the Queen's colt, Choir Boy, won the Royal Hunt Cup on 17 June 1953, a fortnight after the Coronation. Among those who can be seen in the photograph are the Duchess of Kent (white pillbox hat, clapping), Princess Margaret, the Duchess of Gloucester, the Queen Mother and Queen Elizabeth II. Date: 1953

Shoreditch Cottage Homes, Hornchurch, Essex

Boys in surplices leaving the chapel at the Shoreditch Union cottage homes, Hornchurch, Essex. Opened in 1889 to house pauper children away from the workhouse, the homes were in the style of a village street - eleven cottages each housed 30 children. There were also schools, a swimming bath, band room, needlework room, workshops, and infirmary

Chapel Royal choristers

Seven Chapel royal boy choristers make their way along the street towards Buckingham Palace for an 11 o'clock service, on the occasion of the King's return to London. The Chapel Royal choir has existed since before the Norman Conquest -- the distinctive State uniforms seen in this photograph date from the reign of Charles II.
