4 - Otto Van Bismarck At Four Stages Of His Career, 1907
4 - Otto Van Bismarck At Four Stages Of His Career, 1907. Bismark in his seventieth year, April 12, 1885. Otto Edward Leopold, Count von Bismarck (1815-1898) was Chancellor of Prussia and architect of modern Germany. His ambition was to unify the various independent German states into a single nation under Prussian leadership. The catalyst to bringing this about was the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, when the other German states fought alongside the Prussians. France was defeated, and in 1871, the German Empire was established, with Bismarck as Chancellor. From The Worlds History, Volume VIII, by Dr. H. F. Helmolt. [William Heinemann, London, 1907]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Otto Van Bismarck at four different stages of his illustrious career. Taken in 1907, the image offers a glimpse into the life of this influential figure who played a pivotal role in shaping modern Germany. In his seventieth year, we see Bismarck exuding wisdom and experience, with a distinguished air about him. Otto Edward Leopold, Count von Bismarck, served as Chancellor of Prussia and was instrumental in unifying the independent German states under Prussian leadership. His ambition to create a single nation became reality after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 when Germany emerged victorious and established itself as an empire with Bismarck at its helm. The sepia-toned photograph captures not only Bismarck's physical appearance but also hints at the era he lived in - a time marked by war and political transformation. The side view allows us to observe his bald head and prominent profile, symbolizing strength and determination. As an aristocrat hailing from Prussia, Bismarck's influence extended far beyond his own country. This portrait serves as a reminder of his significant contributions to European history during the late 19th century. Preserved through engraving techniques, this black-and-white image carries historical weight that transports us back to an era defined by great change. It is through photographs like these that we can appreciate the legacy left behind by remarkable individuals such as Otto Van Bismarck - leaders whose impact continues to resonate even today.
