Otto von Bismarck was a German statesman who served as the first Chancellor of the German Empire from 1871 to 1890. He is credited with unifying Germany and establishing it as a major European power. Bismarck was born in 1815 into an aristocratic Prussian family and studied law at the University of Göttingen. After working in various government positions, he became Prime Minister of Prussia in 1862, where he successfully implemented a series of reforms that increased Prussia's power and influence within Germany. In 1871, Bismarck oversaw the unification of Germany under Prussian leadership and became its first Chancellor. During his tenure as Chancellor, Bismarck pursued policies designed to strengthen Germany's position both domestically and internationally. He sought to protect German interests through diplomatic means rather than through military aggression, leading to alliances with Austria-Hungary and Italy (the so-called "Three Emperors' League"). He also negotiated several treaties with other European powers that secured peace for decades after his death in 1898. His legacy continues to be celebrated today for his role in unifying Germany and making it one of Europe's most powerful countries during his lifetime.
