The Franco-Prussian War was a conflict between the Second French Empire and the German states of the North German Confederation led by the Kingdom of Prussia. It lasted from July 1870 to May 1871. The war began when France declared war on Prussia in response to Otto von Bismarck's demand that Wilhelm I be proclaimed Emperor of Germany, which was seen as a direct challenge to French hegemony in Europe. The Prussians quickly defeated the French forces and occupied much of France, including Paris. After several months of siege, Paris surrendered in January 1871 and an armistice was signed in May 1871. The Treaty of Frankfurt ended the war with Prussia annexing Alsace-Lorraine from France, while also forcing France to pay reparations for its losses during the conflict.
