EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Last Judgement and the Resurrection of the Dead" left-hand panel from the Redemption Triptych, created by Vrancke van der Stockt in approximately 1460. The artwork, measuring 195x77 cm, is housed at the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain. At first glance, one's eyes are drawn to Christ depicted as the Judge of Mankind. Standing on a globe with an air of authority, he holds both the Sword of Justice and the Lily of Mercy. Surrounding him are small scenes depicting various corporal works of mercy - acts of compassion towards those in need. Beneath Christ's figure lie two prominent figures: Virgin Mary and Saint John. An angel can be seen welcoming blessed souls into heaven on their left side while devils drag down the damned to hell on their right side. It is worth noting that Vrancke van der Stockt was a pupil of Rogier van der Weyden, who was initially believed to be responsible for this triptych. However, further research has attributed it to Van der Stockt himself. Intriguingly, during the 16th century, this masterpiece belonged to Leonor Mascarenas – governess to King Philip II – who generously gifted it to her founded Convent of Nuestra Señora de los Angeles. This extraordinary photograph allows viewers worldwide to appreciate every intricate detail within this remarkable Netherlandish artwork that explores themes of judgement and redemption with profound depth and skillful execution.
