John the Baptist was a Jewish preacher and ascetic who lived in the 1st century AD. He is best known for baptizing Jesus and preparing the way for his ministry. He was an important figure in early Christianity, and is mentioned by all four gospels. John preached repentance and baptism to prepare people for the coming of Jesus, whom he identified as "the Lamb of God". His teachings were based on Old Testament prophecies, particularly those of Isaiah. He also had a strong influence on later Christian movements such as monasticism and asceticism. John's death is recorded in all four gospels; he was beheaded by Herod Antipas at Machaerus Fortress after criticizing Herod's marriage to his brother's wife.
