The blaze was caused by the burning of small wooden tally sticks which had been used as part of the accounting procedures of the Exchequer until 1826. The sticks were disposed of in a careless manner in the two furnaces under the House of Lords, which caused a chimney fire in the two flues that ran under the floor of the Lords chamber and up through the walls.); eLondon Metropolitan Archives; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1834, capturing a hauntingly beautiful scene of the Palace of Westminster in London. The image showcases the aftermath of a devastating fire that engulfed this historic medieval royal palace, which served as the British parliament's home. The destruction was caused by an unfortunate incident involving small wooden tally sticks used for accounting purposes until 1826. These seemingly innocent objects were carelessly disposed of in furnaces beneath the House of Lords, resulting in a catastrophic chimney fire that spread through flues under the Lords chamber and up into its walls. In this photograph, we witness workmen surveying what remains of this once grand structure. The skeletal figures stand amidst ruins and rubble, their presence emphasizing both the scale of destruction and human resilience. The charred walls serve as a poignant reminder of what once stood proudly on this site. Despite its ruined state, there is still an undeniable beauty to be found within these remnants. The intricate details and architectural elements hint at past glory while evoking a sense of melancholy. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back to that fateful day when flames consumed history itself. It serves as a testament to both the fragility and enduring spirit embodied by our most cherished landmarks - reminding us that even from ashes can rise new beginnings.
