A curious scene (colour litho)

2783665 A curious scene (colour litho) by Beltrame, Achille (1871-1945); Private Collection; (add.info.: A curious scene. While Vicere Grazianis car, on inspection, was passing through the Sidamo region, three indigenous amharas who had belonged to rebellious armed gangs, and who now lived miserably in the woods, are presented half-naked on the track, bearing a large stone in the head as a sign of obedience. Do not eat, do not sleep, always afraid that Sidamo will open his stomach, said the three men, who, begging for mercy, asked Marshal Graziani to be able to serve Italy as ascari. A few moments later, the three penitents wore their uniforms. Illustration for Courier Sunday, 31 January 1937.); © Look and Learn

A Curious Scene

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures a moment of intrigue and transformation. In this vibrant color lithograph by Achille Beltrame, we are transported to the Sidamo region of Ethiopia during the colonial era. The image depicts three indigenous Amharas, former members of rebellious armed gangs, standing half-naked on a dusty road. They bear a large stone on their heads as a symbolic gesture of obedience. As Vicere Graziani's car passes through the region for inspection, these men present themselves in humble submission, seeking redemption and an opportunity to serve Italy as ascari soldiers. Their desperate plea for mercy tugs at our heartstrings, revealing their miserable existence in the woods - constantly living in fear that Sidamo will open their stomachs. In response to their heartfelt request, Marshal Graziani grants them forgiveness and uniforms within moments. This powerful illustration from Courier Sunday on January 31st, 1937 showcases both propaganda and empathy intertwined with one another. Beltrame's skillful rendering brings forth the complexities of colonialism: power dynamics between Italians and Ethiopians; rebellion versus submission; poverty versus privilege. It serves as a reminder that even amidst oppression and hardship, there can be opportunities for change and redemption. This thought-provoking image invites us to reflect upon the multifaceted nature of historical events while raising questions about identity, justice, and humanity within imperial contexts.
