EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Woolworths store on Bank Hey Street in Blackpool, Lancashire. The image beautifully captures the grandeur of this historic building, with its tall square tower dominating the south-west elevation. Originally established by F W Woolworth in 1916, this particular store underwent significant expansion and reconstruction in 1936 before reopening its doors to the public in 1938. At that time, it proudly held the title of being the largest Woolworths store worldwide, a testament to its popularity and success. The photograph transports us back to an era when shopping at Woolies was a cherished experience for many. Its art deco architecture is striking against a backdrop of vibrant red accents, creating an imposing presence on Blackpool's high street. Although no longer operating as a Woolworths store since its closure in the 1980s, this building has continued to serve various purposes over time. It has housed Price Busters, Sports Direct, and even Wetherspoons throughout different periods. Nicholas Anthony John Philpot's skillful composition allows us to appreciate both the historical significance and architectural beauty of this landmark structure. This print serves as a visual reminder of our ever-evolving urban landscapes while honoring important pieces of our shared heritage.
